I don’t remember when I began reading, I do remember always having books to read. When I was given books for birthdays and Christmas I would dive into the new book. Some nights I would stay up later than usual so I could finish and move to the next book in the series. I want my daughter to have the same love of reading that I have and had growing up.

We have been buying books for our daughter since she was a baby and love for us to read her the books from her collection. With an unbelievable imagination, she always has a good story to tell. While our daughter is still learning to read, she sometimes struggles and gets a bit frustrated. During the school year, I noticed that when stories were written, most words were missing the vowels, I was usually able to read her story.

We have been trying other apps and using a binder to practice words, letters and numbers, she seems to be getting bored and wants to give up. I want something that allows her to learn in a fun way. When I brought home some books for the Ooka Island app, my daughter became quite excited about the reading game.

Your child will not move ahead until ready.

While listening and speaking are natural, reading must be taught like every other skill. Science has proven it’s a complex process requiring mastery of five foundational skills: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension.

My daughter adventures on Ooka Island started at the beginning of July. Each week she independently spends approximately 2-3 hours expanding her reading abilities.  She has the choice to read or play. There are weekly progress reports. This week showing me that she isn’t always understanding and retaining what she has learned. With the progress reports, I am able to help out with those foundational skills and help her move on.

Follow along each month as I update my daughters reading progress.
